Values Auction

values auction was a very useful assignment for me. It helped me see what kind of things I would want to look for when deciding on a major and in the future a job. Because I have taken Student Development before, I have actually done this values auction before, but I would have to say that this time around, I understood it more and I actually saw what and why I would want a certain value.
The values that I bid on were Time Freedom and Work with Others. Time Freedom was my original number 1 auction that I wanted. I didn’t put down any money budgeted for Work with others, but it was something I had been looking at as something I want. All of my other options were already taken and I thought that they weren’t really worth it or I didn’t have any more money to auction with. But I love these values because having the freedom to work when I want would be such a blessing because things happen in life that you cant control. And working with others is something that I would want to do, no matter what it is. I would never want to work behind a desk all day by myself.
My values have always come from my family and those around me. I see the things that my family values and that becomes what I value. I see the things that the people around my value and I either value those things or I see that they are not good things to value and I steer clear of them. I have always valued my family and the time I spend with them. That is why Freedom with my Time and Schedule would be something that I would look for in a job or major. I would hate to be those types of people who work all day and become work-a-holics and have no time for their family. Ever since I was younger, that is something I have always wanted.
My values that I chose have kind of been met in previous jobs. The top ten values I chose were Time Freedom, Public Contact, Help Others, Make Decisions, Financial Gain, Excitement, Adventure, Security, Change and Variety, and Influence People. All I have ever done for a job is dance or spray tattoos on people. Those jobs did have a lot of the things that I chose for my values, but some of those things weren’t on it either. For my tattoos job, I did have time freedom to the extent that I was able to choose the morning or afternoon shift. I did have a lot of public contact and I was able to help others as well as some financial gain. But for dancing, I was able to have pretty much everything on my list except the Time Freedom. I was able to perform for a changing group of people every day and have some kind of contact with them. I loved that job and it would be something I would love to do for the rest of my career, except it doesn’t give enough of a Financial Gain. I would never be able to make enough money to support my family and gibe them what they want through just dancing. I would love to do it in my free time, but that would have to wait until I can actually figure out what I want in life.
Because of my previous experience and my values, I know what I need to look for. I know what not to look for and what is most important to me. I know that I need to think of others and think my future when it comes to choosing this. This values auction has really shown me where I need to put my money and where I need to steer clear from.
